MOMENTUM TRADER(TM)
README.DOC
===============================================
Thanks for trying Momentum Trader!
In case your distribution disk did not come with a manual,
a twelve page "Jump Start" version can be printed from
this disk.
The manual is located in the file MTMANUAL.DOC. You can
load it into your word processor and print it, or you can
log into that directory and print it directly from the file
with the DOS command:
COPY MTMANUAL.DOC PRN <Enter>
----------------
Please feel free to give copies of the evaluation diskette to
your friends. Once you have received an unrestricted,
registered copy, however, do not pass it on. This is a
violation of copyright law and makes it unproductive for
shareware authors to bring you quality software in this manner.
DIFFICULT DOWNLOADS
CompuServe allows only twenty stock quotes to be retrieved
at a time, unless the user "backs out" to a higher menu and
requests re-entry into the BASICQUOTES area. This appears
to be a workaround to allow this popular area to handle peak
loads. Momentum Trader handles this "menu jumping"
automatically. When the BASICQUOTES section is very busy,
however, CompuServe will deny re-entry. Downloading two
hundred stocks twenty at a time requires entry into the
quotes section ten times, increasing the chances of being
denied entry on one of the attempts (thus spoiling your
download).
We have addressed this difficulty, and with Release 1.11,
we believe we have solved this problem in such a way that
the download is not interrupted. Momentum Trader will
make up to ten repeated attempts to re-establish the download.
Depending on the time of day you usually download your
stock prices, you may see this corrective action
occuring when you download. Don't be hasty
in cutting off a download. MTrader times out (stops waiting
for CS in 180 seconds (3 minutes). We have observed
successful downloads after more than a 100 second wait.
There's another reason for not cutting off a download
before the timeout. MTrader writes a diagnostic file
each time it downloads (DIAGNOST.HST). The file is
properly closed at the end of the timeout. If you have
problems, this file can be used to help in the diagnosis.
The file is a text file; you can look at it if you like
with a file reader, editor, or word processor.
CompuServe has the largest selection of stock prices of
any online service we have checked. If you have
occasion to speak to their customer service representatives,
you may wish to urge them to expand the capacity of
this service.
